Hip Hop In A Hat Vol. 1 First In Calgary!

For the first time ever in Calgary, Hip Hop Synergy brings you the event of the century! Ok maybe not that epic but still, if your looking for the best way to spend your friday night and you’re a closet hip hop enthusiast like most Calgarians are, you need to come out and support this brand new movement!

The night will unfold in the most peculiar and chaotic way ever imagined. First Calgary’s premier DJ, Ritchie will kick off the night spinning the best hits of hip hop to set the mood just right. Everyone will gather ’round the stage to watch the host make a fool of himself by offering puny quips and out dated jokes. Before you know what hits you the event will kick off at precisely 9:30 PM with an unpredictable start. A member of the audience will draw the first artist to perform out of a hat!

The artists will continue through the roster in this exact fashion, creating an energetic and incredibly involved environment unlike any other hip hop event to hit this city! Audience members will be responsible for choosing the best artist of the night using a new voting system created and developed by the Hip Hop Synergy team. The artist with the best performance of the night will be awarded with a certificate and hundreds of dollars worth of prizes donated by local business who support the original and upcoming stars of YYC.

Other businesses and artists have offered up door prizes for the guests as well which will be randomly thrown out at the audience members who show the most enthusiasm and involvement in the event. The organizers hope to make this event an ongoing monthly debacle for the hip hop community to continue growing in a positive and reinforcing environment.

If you want to attend the event you can purchase tickets from any of the artists listed in the roster for the evening. All the money from the tickets is going to be divided up among the artists to help them support their growing career in the music industry! There will be a merch table offering some of the artist’s fine apparel and CD’s and on the Hip Hop Synergy site a page has been set up to provide the audience with a digital compilation of the music for them to continue to enjoy and support the artists they love.

This just might be the best Hip Hop event born in the city full of secret Hip Hop lovers! The only way this event can continue to grow, shed light on the artists and their music, and positively re-invent the image of the Calgary urban scene is through the continuing support of the fans so if you want to learn more about the event, RSVP on the Facebook event page, or purchase tickets from the artists to help support them, visit any of the links below! See you there!

10@10 3 Year Anniversary

If you’ve been a part of YYC’s hip hop scene then you already know about the 10@10 phenomenon. If your new to the wonderful city of Calgary, good old Cow Town, then you should get yourself well versed in whats going on around town and who’s who. The amazing team at 10@10 have been building something that has, so far, been paralleled by none. A real, down to earth, atmosphere of community and culture that sums up the heart of Calgary’s hip hop scene. The team at the heart of it all, including the few I’ve met, Beni J, Rico, and, Ryan, have been nothing but absolutely charitable in their endeavours to bring life to an otherwise salty and diminished underground scene. Jaded as I may be, Calgary doesn’t really have a lot going for it when it comes to the hip hop underground and without the 10@10 crowd it would seem to be almost lifeless.

Recently the 10@10 team has celebrated its third year in rotation in the Calgary Hip Hop scene and for that we should all be raising a glass. A toast to those as truly dedicated as this team to bringing a warm atmosphere, good vibes, and amazing talent to the forefront of our great city’s profile. Hat’s off to everyone involved from the organizers to the artists without you all it would never be possible. In the words of the 10@10 team, Let’s Build, and continue building until we get our city on the map as one of the true hubs of hip hop and urban art, culture, music, and dance!

Obsidian Awards Show

This years Obsidian Awards Show was an incredible success. The administration was inspiring, to say the least, in bringing light to the stars of our city. While there were several nominees that truly stood above the crowd in the ceremony few made it to the front line. Among the nominees were amazing people like entrepreneur of the year candidates Jasmine Jefferies-Siria and Joyce Jebose, but taking the winning spot was Justin Toge. Several other categories were listed including: Professional of the year winner Evelyn Ackah, Business leader of the year Margaret Adu, Philanthropist of the year Nii Tawiah Koney, High School Student of the year Azeria Telesford, Peoples Choice Promoter of the year One Entertainment, and Media Personality of the year Will Haze.

Some of the other mentionable nominees included Apparel designer of the year Cash Bradshaw, Rapper of the year Jay Thaddeus, and Singer of the year Nadi Downz.

We’d like to give a big thanks to all those involved with putting together such an amazing event! If you’d like to see the rest of this years nominees and award winners just click over to Obsidian Awards Home Page right here.
